Project:
A critical edition of the Complete Theater of Alexandre Dumas the Elder. While the last edition (out of print) of Dumas's so-called Théâtre complet contained 66 plays, the new one will include 117 dramas. The 51 additional titles can be divided in the following way: 2 plays signed by Dumas and published separately, 22 unpublished ones (6 of which are incomplete), and 27 which appeared solely under the names of his collaborators—because he did not like to sign with a co-author, or because lie was avoiding his creditors. These latter plays can be attributed to Dumas on the basis of positive proofs (letters, copyrights and handwriting of the manuscripts). Dumas's plays (his original ones and those he drew from his novels) are still appreciated; they can be seen increasingly on the stage, on television or adapted for films. Dumas is one of the four main French Romantic playwrights—the others being Vigny, Hugo and Musset. The plays of these competitors have been reprinted; an edition of Dumas's plays is now appropriate. This edition will consist of a General Introduction, and for each play: an Introduction, a Chronology, a Bibliography as well as Illustrations and Variants (when manuscripts and various editions are available and show differences). For the plays in manuscripts, it will be necessary to establish the text. |
