Project: A cycle of three sonatas, one for violin and piano, one for viola and piano, and one for cello and piano, entitled Three Sonatas to Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita. The cycle is conceived as a set of works that can be performed individually, but that performed together would function much like the three acts of an opera. The works will be linked by a particular formal device I have been using for several years, in which musical materials cycle through the sections or movements of a work in unexpected and challenging ways. This will be my first attempt to extend this technique across multiple works.
