Project: The partial composition of KURSK: an oratorio requiem, for 10 singers and 27 instruments, to poetry by Anzhelina Polonskaya. The first phase of the process was working with Anzhelina to shape the structure of the work, and then select the poetry that was most apposite and sensitive to subject matter, that would also deliver a balanced dramatic arc for the work. The second phase involved the composition and editing of four of fourteen sections of the oratorio, (3 poems and one chamber orchestral interlude), resulting in approximately 24 minutes or choral/orchestral writing in a work that will be ultimately be 80 minutes in duration. Preliminary sketches for three other sections were also achieved, and some 10 minutes of acousmatic music for the final concert organized by Patricia Alessandrini. The time at Camargo allowed me to further refine increasingly detailed instrumental technique. It has consequently impacted my general estimates on labor and time, and brought me back into a way of working that prioritized quality over quantity.
