Project: Composition of a full-length ballet La Infanta, commissioned by the San Francisco Ballet. The scenario is based on Oscar Wilde's story "The Birthday of the Infanta," which was inspired by Velasquez's painting of the Infanta Maria Theresa. The ballet contrasts the spontaneity, naturalness and vulnerability of the dwarf with the impregnable formality and cynicism of the Spanish court, the Infanta being transformed by the former and the dwarf being destroyed by the latter. Correspondingly, simple diatonic, harmonically tonal treatment of musical motives is contrasted with more complex, chromatic and serial development to convey these dramatic and psychological transformations through musical structure.
