Project:
A four-act, one hour and 15 minute opera for chamber ensemble (flute, clarinet, piano, violin, cello) and bluegrass band (fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, bass) with four lead voices. The opera is set in a small southern town and utilizes music of the Appalachians as well as tunes from the Southern Harmony hymnal. Entitled Cast Out Devils, Speak With New Tongues (retitled while at Camargo) on a libretto by the composer, the composed music transforms the folk and hymn materials for the chamber ensemble and singers while additionally being played in traditional manners by the bluegrass band, sometimes in harmonic and rhythmic agreement, and sometimes and stylistic and sonic clash. |
